We are introducing some topics about environmental activities of the RYOBI's Printing Equipment Business.

IGAS2007: Presenting Environmentally Friendly Printing Technologies at One of the World's Four Largest Printing Equipment Exhibitions

IGAS2007,
one of the world's four largest printing equipment exhibitions and materials, was held from September 21 to 27 using the entire Tokyo Big Sight complex. RYOBI took advantage of the event to present many of its business systems specifically for printing companies. Among these was the RYOBI 784EP B2-size offset press, which has been developed based on a concept of space and energy savings under a theme of low-impact environmentally friendly printing. The presentation included a demonstration of the system's printing capabilities.

Energy-saving printing presses

All RYOBI printing presses offer energy-conscious designs that reduce electricity consumption. However, even among these systems, RYOBI 780E series presses, with their leading-edge, energy-saving designs, deliver an approximately 18% reduction in power consumption over other RYOBI models handling the same document size and number of colors. This allows energy consumption to be decreased by more than 8,000 kwh per year, which translates into annual reductions in CO2 emissions of around four tons.* * May vary depending on the operating environment and conditions.

Reduction of printing materials

In order to decrease the consumption of printing materials such as paper and inks, it is important to reduce defective items and waste sheets, etc. The RYOBI 784E is equipped with automated functions and devices that address two key related problems: reduction of the number of sheets printed during the test printing and stabilization of the printing quality during an actual run. When the effects of these material reductions are calculated in average printing conditions, it is possible to reduce annual paper consumption by approximately 620,000 sheets and annual ink consumption by a total of around 330 kg, for the four CMYK inks.* * May vary depending on the operating environment and conditions.

Control of environmental VOC emissions

A demonstration of RYOBI's "non-alcohol" printing was given in response to the problems related to controlling the environmental emission of VOCs. The demonstration also illustrated the process's ability to use non VOC inks, which does not include VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

Presentation of processless plates requiring no developing chemicals (developmentless plates)

The presentation also demonstrated the use of processless plates (developmentless plates). These plates require no discharge of waste liquids---something that is essential in environmentally friendly printing. Using developmentless plates eliminates the need to store, manage, and dispose of processing chemicals.

Introduction of a dampening solution filtering device

At IGAS2007 RYOBI also introduced a dampening solution filtering device that keeps dampening water in a uniform state, constantly maintaining it in a clean condition. This device enables the volume of waste dampening water to be decreased, thereby reducing environmental impact.
