Issuance of Environmental Reports
|
Over the last few years, the number of companies that began issuing
environmental reports as a part of their CSR activities has been increasing.
With the RYOBI 684 in-house, MARUWA Printing Co., Ltd. (President: Hisashi Torihara, No. of employees: 35) issues an Environmental Report
each year and works positively towards implementing environmental
measures. In their "Environmental Report 2006", they explain what
kind of waste is generated in the printing process and what activities the
company is involved in, etc.

Actively communicating with the local community
|
The motto at MARUWA Printing Co. is "cheerful, energetic and honest", indicating their desire for
their staff to always maintain those 3 attributes.
They further aim at active communication with the
local community from the belief that the company is
also an important member of society. Some simple
approaches to this are the involvement in the cleanup
of the parks nearby the company and the participation
in eco-campaigns sponsored by Nagoya City, etc. Through these activities, communication with
local residents is being promoted and employee-consciousness towards the environment has been
enhanced.
According to President Torihara, "through such goals as the acquisition of ISO14001 and ISO9001,
and the introduction of an ISMS (information security management system), activities that are normally considered rare for a company of our size, we're actively working towards in-house
standardization. And I would like to use such activities to create a workplace environment where
employees can keep their motivation at all times."

Selecting the RYOBI 684 as their main printing press
|
Through print jobs centered on pamphlets and handbills, elementary and junior high school
yearbooks, and orders from government and other public offices, etc., MARUWA Printing plans,
produces, and prints materials that have a close connection to their local area, and it is the RYOBI
684 A2 4-color printing press that they have selected as their main printing press.
President Torihara explained, "Hasn' t the time to discuss printing presses with a speed of tens
of thousands of rpm ended? Now that printing lots have become so small, a company' s overall
capabilities, in print preparation and such changeover processes as plate-changing, all the way
through to print out, has become very important."
Yasushi Ohi, the plant manager, then offered us the following words of praise for the RYOBI 684.
"Inking, changing paper, and switching the pull side guide all can be accomplished very quickly
and reliably. I love that even small lot jobs and those that required quite a number of changes can
be handled quickly, and that waste sheets can be reduced as well." The idea that shortening work
times not only leads to an improvement in productivity but is also the first step to implementing
environmental measures. RYOBI 684 is an ideal press for Maruwa printing company who realizes
the idea.

Reducing CO2 emissions
|
At MARUWA Printing, electricity use that is related to carbon dioxide emission is recorded every
month and reported at monthly meeting. Because the amount of electricity used increases greatly in
summer and winter, rules for using air conditioners are posted to inform the employees.
In order to reduce the amount of gasoline used as well, "No Car" days are designated three times a
year and, along with a review of the districts that each salesperson is in charge of, the company has
prohibited the idling of business vehicles when parked.
To additionally cut down such effluents as the ink that is discharged from the company, MARUWA
Printing also works to eliminate wasted ink through the use of an automatic ink mixing system.
|
|
|
Reducing the use of intermediate materials through CTP
|
By advancing the printing process totally towards CTP, MARUWA has worked towards eliminating
the need for film, which ultimately turns into waste as an intermediate material. In addition, the
conventional handover of films to cooperating companies has also been changed to a transfer of
those films as data. By converting paper originals into data, a system that enables CTP output has
been constructed for the polyester based plates as well.

Actively approaching environmental preservation
|
All 35 employees are unified at MARUWA Printing Company Ltd., in working on and practicing
environmental preservation activities as indicated above, and President Torihara spoke to us about
his aspirations for the future as well. "What I see as necessary from here on is self-promotion. I
think that we need to put thought into promoting sales. Our ability to make proposals and implement
in-house standardization... Further communication with the local area... I would like to have our
company known better through activities such as these and to become an entity that is thoroughly
approved of by the community."
