Proactive Development of Environmentally Friendly
Printing with the RYOBI 684

NISSIN LIGHT COLOR, which has introduced the RYOBI 684, is engaged in a company-wide environmental initiative with environmental protection and conservation measures as key themes. The whole printing process performed at the company, from plate making through to printing, is conducted in line with the Clione mark certification system administered by the Environment Pollution Prevention Printing Association (E3PA). The company has already acquired Gold Plus certification and is proactively developing the process as its own environmentally aware printing system. NISSIN also vigorously endorses environmentally friendly printing to its clients and is undertaking various measures against environmental pollution. The approach being followed by the company is described in more detail below.

Plate making

In its plate making process, the company operates from the standpoint of not using plate developing fluids. To this end, it has introduced thermal type CTP and is currently using processless plates. As a result, in addition to the waste fluids from plate developing, there have been reductions in the liquids from plate making films and also film developing/fixing. When conventional PS plates (non-thermal type) are used for reprinting, measures are taken to prevent the discharge of waste water and other liquids from plate processing. This involves recovering the liquids and incineration of them using thermal processing.

Printing

In its printing process, NISSIN uses the RYOBI 684, a highly appropriate press for environmentally friendly printing. With this press, the company engages in non-alcohol printing that uses dampening water with zero IPA. In addition, NISSIN is working to reduce the volume of waste liquids by using a dampening water filtering device. When the filter is being exchanged, the waste liquid is recovered and disposed of using thermal processing. Finally, NISSIN uses soy inks in its printing. These inks contain volatile organic solvent levels of 1% or less.

Prepress

Even in the DTP work, NISSIN has implemented the following measures on the environmental front. In its in-house proof inspection of data, the company is using an ink jet printer due to the reductions in developing and fixing liquids offered by this simple offset proof press. NISSIN also strongly recommends the use of an ink jet printer for proofing to its clients.

NISSIN also strongly recommends the use of an ink jet printer for proofing to its clients. At present, with environmental destruction becoming a serious problem right around the world, there is heightened concern and awareness of environmental protection as an area of corporate social responsibility among NISSIN's clients. As a result, these clients have apparently been happy to accept the company's proposal for the creation of printed materials based on its environmentally aware printing system. The clients have also shown an increased receptiveness to printed materials with the Clione mark, as part of efforts to deal with environmental issues. In conjunction with the promotion of this type of environmentally friendly printing, each NISSIN staff member is also maintaining a strong awareness of environmental issues. These personnel are working diligently to create higher-level environmental protection and conservation activities, which also includes acquiring ISO 14001 certification for NISSIN's. Preparations for this are currently moving forward on a company-wide basis.
